Spirit through discipline.
Raymond Chow, Computer Technology Program Coordinator - Continuing Studies, Faculty
Since first joining Langara as an instructor in 2003, Raymond Chow has found a multitude of ways to express his interests and share them with others, from teaching computer courses to hosting special events for the campus community. Between his teaching duties and serving as Coordinator for Continuing Studies' Computer Technology Program, Raymond saw an opportunity to enhance campus life with an activity that balances the mental and the physical: the ancient Japanese sport of kendo.
After more than a year of reaching out to key players in the kendo community and connecting with staff and student organizations, Raymond realized his vision. The Langara Kendo Club officially kicked off on November 8, 2012, with Ray Murao—Head Instructor of the Steveston Kendo Club and former Team Canada Coach and Champion—in place as club teacher.
"The Kendo Club enhances campus life as it serves as a different outlet for students to socialize. Not all students may be attracted to the more traditional sports such as soccer, basketball, or badminton, but may be willing to try something new. The Kendo Club provides that option."
Langara is the first college in the lower mainland to establish a kendo club. Members practice twice weekly year-round, and participate in events both on and off campus.
"I’m really proud of all the members, as they’ve really stepped up to the plate and shown their enthusiasm to the college and the community."
