Olivia Rasulov, Nursing Alumna

Olivia Rasulov was attracted to Langara’s Nursing degree program because of it’s reputation, but once there she discovered so much more. The vast number of clinical placement hours in lower mainland health care settings, along with international experience opportunities provided unparalleled hands-on experience.

Olivia wondered if her hearing impairment would hold her back, but Langara’s Disability Services department was there for her. They advocated on her behalf, connecting her with the necessary resources and specialized equipment, such as an amplified stethoscope, that enabled her to be successful in the program.

“I could not have successfully completed this program without help from Disability Services. They helped me a lot during my placement by enabling me to have an individual instructor, who provided me with one-on-one guidance in the clinical practicum settings - something that I did not expect to happen prior to coming to this program.”

In collaboration with nursing instructors, Olivia published her first article in the Journal of Nursing Care about accommodating the needs of nursing students and nurses with a hearing impairment.

“I have learned how to become a better advocate both for myself and for other individuals with disabilities. As a result, I have decided to pursue a Masters or PhD, and dedicate my research toward promoting fair, bias-free learning accommodations for health sciences students, and advocate for fair, discrimination-free employment of health care professionals with disabilities.”
