Jeff Burgess, Continuing Studies Program Coordinator

Successfully launching a new Continuing Studies program requires an expert in the field of study – somebody who is passionate, familiar with the industry, and willing to build from the ground up. For Langara’s Commercial Illustration Certificate Program, Jeff Burgess was just that person.

A successful freelance artist behind brands like Molson, Sobeys, and Shaftebury Brewing, as well as an experienced instructor, Jeff had a wealth of expertise to offer prospective Illustration students. While the role of developing and coordinating the new program was a daunting one, he took the plunge and launched it in 2011.

“I tell my students about the importance of time management in being successful, and I’ve had to put that into practice. Along with working at Langara, I teach courses in illustration, life drawing, and applied illustration. But what could be better than being responsible for the education of students in a field you are well versed in? I like the idea of passing on the knowledge you have accumulated to those who follow.”

With the support of the College community, Jeff turned the fledgling Illustration series into a growing and successful addition to the Applied Arts programming area of Langara Continuing Studies – all while maintaining his private illustration practice. Now entering its third year under Jeff’s watchful eye, the program continues to grow both in size and reputation as graduates begin to emerge.

“I feel I’ve made a lot of friends amongst the people here at Langara and have worked hard to build bridges with other departments and foster open relationships with a positive demeanor. It’s great to – for the first time in my adult life – work with a fraternity of bright and intelligent people who all share the same initiatives and philosophies when it comes to education in general, and Continuing Studies specifically.”

In addition to his busy freelance career – he is represented by repART in Vancouver – Jeff also maintains a packed gallery and a commission-work schedule, as well as the practice of mentoring students in his studio during the summer.
